Club History

The 1960's will also long be remembered for another breakthrough in the Club. In 1960 Mrs. Patsy Nugent (nee O Brien) founded Cratloe Camogie Club. Patsy who played for Clare in 62' and 63' got involved with the cumann through her place of work S.P.S and with her enthusiasm and drive had set up a strong camogie club with herself acting as both team captain and chairperson. Fr. Halpin R.I.P and then P.P, readily agreed to be President of the club and saw it last as a separate entity for the most of the 1960's peaking in 1963 when Cratloe lifted the inaugural Conway Cup at Dr. Daly Park in Tulla. The following year the women of Cratloe were unlucky not to retain the title when they were beaten in a downpour by rivals Sixmilebridge.

Unfortunately numbers dwindled for one reason or another and after that year, the club continued to exist in name only.

That was until 2011 when a parent, Michelle Gardner, noticed how many local talented young girls were playing camogie in neighbouring parishes. Cratloe had a thriving GAA club, and girls were welcome to train but could not play competitively beyond a certain age. Michelle took on the mammoth task of reforming Cratloe Camogie Club, and with the help of Clare Development Officer Deirdre Murphy, did so by offering 8 training sessions in the community hall.

The sessions were a great success and so the next step was to set about building a committee. This part was instrumental to the way we see the club today as it was those initial volunteers that were driving force behind building it up. Cratloe Camogie Club was relaunched in April 2011 and roughly 80 members registered in that first year of being reformed. To begin with there were four teams-U8, U10, U12, U13. Peter Casey helped by running basic coaching courses to the large number of parents who offered to be coaches in the early development stages.

One the standout moments for our club was in 2015 when our Feile Team represented Clare in Co. Derry. The team was coached by John Ryan and Pakie O Gorman and went all the way to a final against Castlegar, Co Galway. After a nail biting display of camogie, we came out on top and claimed All Ireland glory!

Fast forward to 2024 and we now have teams from U6 right up to Junior, the age groups change from odd to even depending on the competition. Our underage teams provide the foundation of our club, with over 150 girls training during the week and close to 35 coaches volunteering their time.

In 2023, Cratloe became Junior C Champions, a historic moment for our club and Cratloe as a whole. The team continue to prove their tenacity and have just become Junior B Champions 2024-a first for our young club! Cratloe Camogie Club is also represented on Clare Senior and Intermediate panels by players, Muireann Scanlon and Mary O Connor.

Cratloe Camogie Club is home to a host of recognisable camogie players, including but not limited Fran Ruane, Laura Linnane, Maire McGrath, -who all share their expertise and experience in some shape or form. Máire is one of only three Clare Camogie Players to ever receive an ALL STAR and is the captain of the Junior Team this year!
